A Harare man has been fined US$150 for assaulting his ex-wife after she refused to accept a Valentine’s Day gift. Brandon Ncube, 22, appeared before Harare magistrate Learnmore Mapiye, where he was convicted of physical abuse but acquitted on a theft charge.
The court heard that on 14th February, Ncube visited his ex-wife, Rebecca Masunda, with a Valentine’s gift. When Masunda declined the gift, citing their separation, Ncube became violent. He allegedly slapped her across the face and grabbed her by the neck, causing her to bleed. Masunda managed to escape and later returned to find her piggy bank, containing US$10,000, missing.
Ncube denied stealing the money, and the magistrate acquitted him of theft due to insufficient evidence. However, the medical affidavit confirmed Masunda’s injuries, leading to his conviction for assault. Magistrate Mapiye emphasised the importance of resolving disputes amicably, stating, “Partners are urged to find peaceful ways to resolve their differences rather than resorting to violence.”
The case highlights the ongoing issue of domestic violence in Zimbabwe, with many victims struggling to seek justice. Authorities have urged individuals to report abuse and seek help from support organisations.
