Mash Central Ministry of Education Accountants Arrested

Two senior Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education officials stationed at the ministry’s Mutungagore Government Complex in Bindura Mashonaland Central appeared at the Bindura Magistrate Court on Friday, October 13 facing charges of corruptly awarding themselves allowances for official duties they never had.

Smart Makarutsa (52)  and Aaron Gomba (52) from the accounts department appeared before magistrate Samantha Dhlamini. The two allegedly awarded themselves US$550 in travelling and subsistence allowances for an assignment that never happened.

The court led by Carson Kundiona heard that the accused in connivance with their colleagues, Benny Muzurura and Lilian Mukorera, still at large submitted fake documents to the Ministry’s Head office for payment.

They allegedly faked the signatures of the Chief Accountant  Miriam Mutandwa and the Acting Provincial Education Director Mr A Mutena.

Their arrest comes on the heels of another similar case at the same offices which saw Lorraine Marodza being arrested also for a similar offence. Gomba and Makarutsa were remanded out of custody on $200 bail each until November 13 2023.
