Mash Central Records Another 26 New Suspected Cholera Cases

Mashonaland Central, on the verge of becoming one of the country’s Cholera hotspots, yesterday January 03, recorded 26 suspected Cholera cases.

In its daily Cholera update yesterday, the Ministry of Health and Child Care said two of the cases were recorded in Rushinga, while Mbire recorded four (4).

Mazowe district, which has already been declared a hotspot after an outbreak of the disease, had 20 suspected cases.

Cumulatively, the province has recorded 392 suspected Cholera cases since March 2023. Of these 392 cases, 38 were confirmed while 327 recovered however the other 26 succumbed.

Mbire district has recorded the highest number of suspected cases so far, standing at 141 and 7 deaths.

Muzarabani (Centenary) follows with the second highest figure, however leading in deaths. The district has recorded 83 cases and 10 deaths whilst Mazowe has 78 cases and three deaths.

Bindura has 49 cases with three deaths while Guruve has three cases and one recorded death. Mt Darwin and Rushinga districts have a combined 29 reported cases and two deaths while Shamva has 14 cases and no recorded death.

Mazowe district remains a  cause of concern both to the health ministry and the provincial leadership. According to the health ministry, two people from Glendale, Mazowe district succumbed to cholera on Monday with 49 cases being recorded in the area which has been flagged as a hotspot of the epidemic.

The government has since adopted a plethora of measures to mitigate the spread of diarrhoea. Mashonaland Central Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Honourable Christopher Magomo said civil protection committees have been activated.

“We are working flat out to avert the spread of cholera in Mashonaland Central Province. It is not only Mazowe which has been affected but, the whole province. I urge all people to exercise high standards of hygiene so that we beat this disease,” he told media recently.
