Mashonaland West Province has retained its top spot at the National Association of Secondary Heads (NASH) athletics games, held yesterday 03 April 2025 at Chipadze High School in Bindura, Mashonaland Central.
Demonstrating remarkable consistency, the province claimed 17 gold medals, 15 silver medals, and 11 bronze medals to emerge as overall champions for the second year running.
Speaking about the victory, Mr Walter Kugarakuripi, who managed the winning team, credited the province’s comprehensive approach to sports development.
“We are thrilled by this achievement,” he said. “Our strategy of training throughout the year and encouraging grassroots participation is paying off. Our athletes gain invaluable experience by competing in numerous tournaments.”
The Mashonaland West team’s success was further attributed to mentorship efforts by larger schools to nurture hidden talent in the region. Team coach Robin Chipfuwa expressed confidence in their formula, saying, “Developing athletes from the grassroots ensures a stronger and more united team.”
Harare Province followed in second place, earning 14 gold medals, 13 silver medals, and 13 bronze medals, while Masvingo Province claimed third place with a tally of 14 gold, 6 silver, and 22 bronze medals.
The host province, Mashonaland Central, finished in fourth place with 12 gold medals, 13 silver, and 3 bronze medals. The remaining positions saw Mashonaland East in fifth, followed by Manicaland in sixth, Midlands in seventh, Matabeleland South in eighth, Bulawayo in ninth, and Matabeleland North in last place.
Mr Charles Chiguware, NASH Mashonaland Central Provincial Chairperson, praised all participants for their effort, while the Provincial Schools Inspector for Sports, Dr Tonderai Mushore, highlighted the collaborative effort behind the event’s success.
“We are honoured to have hosted such a significant event,” Mushore said, extending gratitude to the local community, political stakeholders, and the educational fraternity.
The competition culminated in the selection of a 63-member team to represent Zimbabwe at the Confederation of Southern Africa Schools Sports Association (COSASSA) games in Eswatini this August.
Harare Province is slated to host the 2026 NASH games, and Mashonaland West hopes to carry its momentum into future competitions. “We are determined to maintain this winning streak and solidify our standing as one of Zimbabwe’s top sporting provinces,” Mr Kugarakuripi remarked.
