Masvingo: Afro Pop Musician Garry Mapanzure Dies in Car Accident at 25
Renowned Afro Pop musician, Garry Mapanzure, sadly passed away in Masvingo after being involved in a car accident that claimed two lives. The incident occurred on Thursday evening, leading to Mapanzure’s untimely death on Friday morning. At just 25 years old, his promising career in music came to a tragic end.
Mapanzure’s journey in music began within the nurturing environment of his pastoral parents. He cultivated his musical talents while studying at Kyle College in Masvingo. It was in 2017 that he made his professional debut in the music industry, capturing the attention of audiences worldwide with his first single, “Wapunza,” which garnered over 2 million views on YouTube.
As Mapanzure’s career soared to astronomic heights it earned him recognition and accolades. In 2019, he received a nomination for the highly esteemed AFRIMA awards in the Best Artiste, Duo or Group in the African R’N’B & Soul category for his exceptional song “TV Room,” a collaboration with the talented artist Hillzy.
In November 2018, Mapanzure participated in the emPawa Africa challenge, initiated by Mr Eazi to provide a platform for emerging African artists to launch their careers. Artists eager to enter the contest were required to upload a brief video (one-minute maximum) on Instagram showcasing their original song, cover, or freestyle, accompanied by the hashtag #emPawa100.
Against fierce competition, Mapanzure emerged victorious as the 10th emPawa Africa pick, making history as the first-ever artist from Zimbabwe to achieve this feat. As part of this renowned initiative, he released the captivating track “Slow,” which was shared on the emPawa YouTube channel.
