Masvingo City is facing ongoing sewage system challenges, with used condoms emerging as a primary cause of blockages and infrastructure strain, according to Mayor Alec Tabe.

During a press briefing on 8 May 2025, Tabe revealed that improper disposal of condoms has led to excessive grit buildup, accelerating mechanical wear and tear on sewage pumps and causing frequent system failures.

“We have removed several bins full of used condoms from our sewer system. The accumulation leads to significant clogging and damage to our infrastructure. It is unacceptable, and we urge residents to dispose of non-biodegradable waste responsibly,” Tabe stated.

He further disclosed that the city collects five to six bins of grit per week, predominantly composed of discarded condoms, contributing to an average of 360 sewer blockages monthly. Despite efforts to swab main sewer lines, ageing equipment continues to struggle with high debris volume, prompting the city to budget for two new pumps in 2025.
