Shylet Mhike, the Provincial Education Director for Masvingo, has been arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) on allegations of criminal abuse of duty as a public officer. She is accused of fraudulently claiming allowances for activities she did not undertake.
Mhike appeared before the Masvingo Magistrates’ Court, where she was granted bail of US$200 and remanded out of custody until 19th March 2025. The allegations against her involve claiming US$600 in travel and subsistence allowances for an Accounts Verification Exercise in Chivi District, which she is said not to have attended.
Prosecutors allege that Mhike conspired with the District Schools Inspector, Ndongwe Evershine, to pressure Tapiwa Mapindani, the Chivi District Accountant, into processing the payment fraudulently. The case has raised concerns about accountability within the education sector.
