Musiiwa Women Sold Deceased Son’s Land, Want To Evict His Family

On June 13th, 2024, the people of Rutope Business Center, also known as Musiiwa in the Bindura Rural District Council, were left in disbelief when they witnessed a traumatic scene.

Rumbidzai Kwaramba, who was married to the late Chamunorwa Kwaramba of Chandavengerwa Village under Chief Musana, woke up to a shocking sight. Her mother-in-law, Cecilia Kamumvuri, was measuring the stand that Rumbidzai had occupied for the past 20 years intending to sell it.

Cecilia Kamumvuri was in the company of a land buyer (name not supplied) whom she had sourced.

When she tried to ask what was happening. The buyer and his crew of eight male bouncers and one female threatened the poor widow with violence.

The altercation from these intruders attracted the attention of multitudes of people who were doing their daily business at Musiiwa Business Centre who rushed to the scene. Among the crowd was the Councillor of the area Mr Kumbirayi Musopero.

Upon seeing many people around, the buyer boasted that his father was a senior member of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) and was the one who had sent them to grab the land.

“War is ended by war, you don’t have anything to do to us. My father is a senior soldier and a war veteran too. He is the one who has sent us to grab this land. You will not do anything to us”, declared the buyer.

Sometime in 2004, Chamunorwa who is the third-born son of Cecilia was allocated land to build his own home by his parents. He developed the land by constructing a five-roomed house, a fowl run, toilets and a bathroom.

In 2016 he passed on leaving behind his wife Rumbidzai and a daughter. Following the death of her son Chamunorwa’s mother Cecilia intended to repossess the stand to sell it. Her husband Remiggio Kwaramba did not approve of the idea. The matter spilled into courts and they were both barred from selling the land since there was a living wife and child.

Cecilia took advantage of her husband’s death in January 2024 to forge ahead with her plan. She sold the stand which measures approximately 2000 square metres. The stand is believed to have been sold for US$2000 according to a close source.

Upon noticing people erecting a security fence around her yard Rumbidzai approached the Village Head Roy Kwaramba who is also a son of Cecilia. He referred her to Herdman Chikosha for a fair trial.

When she approached the Herdman, he demanded a $30 upfront payment to attend the scene. After the payment was done the Herdman visited the scene. He ruled in Rumbidzai’s favour and asked the mother-in-law not to sell her deceased son’s land.

A few days later things took a drastic turn as the Herdman was back again persuading Rumbidzai to accept her mother-in-law’s decision to sell her stand. She was so disturbed that she did not know who to turn to.

All hell broke loose when Cecillia was heard shouting in the presence of Rumbidzai and several other witnesses that there was nothing to stop her from selling the land as her buyer had paid all the authorities.

“You will not do anything to stop this man from taking over this land because he has paid US $300 to the Herdman, US $200 to the Village Head and gave me my $1500. There is nowhere you can take the issue too”, boastfully shouted Cecilia.

Headman Chikosha professed ignorance of any land sale but he however acknowledged attending the disputed land in trying to settle the matter. She said the old lady was trying to implicate him in her dubious deals.

“We do not allow selling land here in Musana. The lady told me that she was not selling but was giving the land to one of her nephews. I am surprised to hear that she sold the land”, said Herdman Chikosha.

Efforts to get a comment from the Village Head were fruitless as he said he was travelling and promised to return the call which he never did.

Rumbidzai lamented the abuse that she is facing as a widow. She is appealing to organisations that represent women’s rights to come to her rescue.

“As you can see they are victimising me, selling my home because they know that I am a widow. I don’t have any powers to fight them. It is my appeal to organisations that represent women, especially widows to come to my rescue “, she said.
