Residents here have welcomed the government’s prioritisation of primary and secondary education in Zimbabwe’s ZWG276.4 billion 2025 national budget, while urging improvements to healthcare and infrastructure during parliamentary feedback sessions this week.

The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Budget heard mixed reactions during consultations in the tobacco-farming town. “The education allocation is good, but clinics need more medicines and staff,” said one resident, reflecting widespread approval of school funding alongside concerns over under-resourced health facilities.

Key community demands included:

  • Faster upgrades to the Kanyemba Road, a critical transport artery linking farming areas to markets
  • Clear plans to address Zimbabwe’s US$21 billion national debt
  • Increased agricultural support for tobacco growers

Acting Committee Chairperson Edwin Mshoriwa emphasised the sessions’ constitutional mandate: “We’re checking if the budget aligns with what communities told us pre-allocation.” Makonde MP Simbarashe Ziyambi added: “These views will shape future budgets through consolidated reports.”

While education received praise, multiple attendees criticised delayed road projects. “The Kanyemba route has been ‘coming soon’ for years. Farmers lose crops due to poor access,” noted a local trader.
