National Hero Brigadier General Ndabambi Laid to Rest
Brigadier General (Retired) Shadreck Dingaan Ndabambi, a decorated hero of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, was laid to rest today at the National Heroes Acre in Harare. The funeral was presided over by Acting President Constantino Chiwenga, who honoured Ndabambi’s significant contributions to the nation.
Ndabambi’s journey to national hero status began last Wednesday when he tragically passed away at his farm in Glendale, Mashonaland Central province. The news of his passing was delivered to the bereaved family by ZANU PF National Political Commissar Munyaradzi Machacha, who lauded Ndabambi’s unwavering dedication and service during the liberation struggle and subsequent peacekeeping missions.
“The late Brig-Gen (Rtd) Ndabambi has been declared a national hero by President Mnangagwa,” Machacha announced. “This honour reflects his bravery, determination, and loyalty.”
War Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs Minister Monica Mavhunga also paid tribute to Ndabambi, highlighting his active involvement in agriculture and economic development even after his military service. “He did not only help liberate the country but also supported its economic growth through his farming activities,” Mavhunga remarked. “He was preparing to market his produce the morning he collapsed.”
Yesterday, a funeral parade was held at Charles Gumbo Barracks to commemorate Ndabambi’s life and service. Zimbabwe National Army Commander Lieutenant General Anselem Sanyatwe delivered a moving eulogy, describing Ndabambi as a “humble and paternal figure” who was deeply committed to the country’s liberation and independence.
“As we bid farewell to the General, we must remember the sacrifices made by him and other heroes for our freedom,” Lt-Gen Sanyatwe said. “It is our duty to uphold the values they fought for and defend Zimbabwe’s sovereignty at all costs.”
Family members also shared their fond memories of Ndabambi. His uncle, Mr Solomon Musaka, remembered him as a “progressive and focused individual”, while his sister, Angeline Rebo, spoke of his role as a peace-builder and unifier within the family.
Brigadier General Ndabambi’s life was one of service and dedication to his country. From his early days as a student activist to his distinguished military career and his later contributions to agriculture, he leaves behind a legacy of patriotism and commitment to Zimbabwe’s development.
