Yesterday (Friday), a freight train derailed near Bindura University of Science Education’s Astra Campus, in the area between FSG and Rumike Engineering.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported in the incident. The National Railways of Zimbabwe public relations manager Mr Andrew Kunambura said technical staff from the locomotive entity are on the ground mending the problem.

“I can confirm that there has been a derailment of our Shanty locomotive carrying fertilisers for FSG in Bindura. Our derailment team is now on the site and the rerailment process has commenced, he said.

Illegal gold miners in the area have been causing significant damage to the railway infrastructure in Bindura.

These miners have been exploring for gold along the railway line adjacent to Metro Peech and Browne, which runs along the Bindura-Shamva railway line.

As a result, the line has sustained serious damage, with rail panels being left hanging as the artisan miners dug beneath them.

Due to the extent of the damage, the railway line has been officially decommissioned.
