Police Detain Ten Suspects Linked to Robberies in Pirate Taxis

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have detained ten individuals suspected of involvement in a series of robberies targeting passengers using Mushikashika vehicles, also known as pirate taxis.ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the detentions on Wednesday, disclosing that the robberies occurred between January 20th and 28th, 2025, in and around Harare’s Central Business District.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of ten suspects in connection with a series of robbery cases in which unsuspecting passengers were targeted after being given lifts in Mushikashika vehicles or pirate taxis in and around the Harare Central Business District between 20th and 28th January 2025,” Nyathi stated.
The apprehended suspects are Liberty Matsika (37), Temptation Mazodze (30), Blessing Murize (32), Rodgers Marufu (26), Golden Tangwanda (38), Admire Makumalo (51), Ashley Bakasa (28), Ndoro Chiriwa Zambezi (28), Stanley Matarutse (48), and Nyasha Kamujoma (32).The arrests followed recent robbery incidents where criminals used Mushikashika vehicles, including Honda Fits, Toyota Fun Cargos, Vitzes, and Sientas, to attract and rob passengers.Between January 20th and 28th, 2025, police monitored the suspects in Harare’s Central Business District after receiving information linking them to the robberies.
Consequently, the suspects were detained, and cellphones, cash, and other valuables were recovered.The suspects are linked to a robbery case where a mobile phone was stolen from a victim who was offered a lift in a Toyota Vitz along Kirkman Road, Harare, on January 27th, 2025, intending to travel to Harare Central Business District.
Additionally, the suspects are implicated in a robbery case in the Majubheki area, Mbare, Harare, where USD 185 and two mobile phones were stolen from a passenger who was offered a lift in a Sienta vehicle, registration number AFZ 1190, from Harare Central Business District to Mbare.”The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that the public should avoid boarding pirate taxis or Mushikashika vehicles and should use registered public service vehicles. Above all, the public should remain vigilant and report any suspicious criminal activities to the police on the National Complaints Desk number (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp on 0712 800197 or report at any nearest Police Station,” Nyathi urged.
