The fight against drug and substance abuse is intensifying in Mashonaland West, with 22 youths being arrested at a party where drugs were being abused in Chegutu.
Provincial Acting Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Effort Chapoto, stated that the police raided the party after Tinashe Kamunda, 23, from Rifle Range, created WhatsApp group links advertising a wild birthday party.
Chapoto mentioned that the attendance fee was US$2 for boys and US$1 for girls, with an additional US$5 charge for liquor per person. The police received a tip-off that drugs were being abused at the party.
The police raided the house, arresting 15 boys and seven girls. During the search, they recovered stubs of smoked dagga, unused condoms, some liquor, and Shisha-smoking equipment.
Chapoto informed that the parents and guardians of the 22 youths were notified. Kamunda was charged with disorderly conduct and paid a fine. All other attendees were also fined and released into the custody of their parents.
“We thank those who provided valuable information,” Chapoto said. “The bond between the community and the police always yields positive results.”
