Next week marks five years since the untimely passing of Zimbabwean broadcaster and media personality, Zororo Makamba, who tragically became the country’s first victim of COVID-19 on 23 March 2020 at the age of 30.

Zororo, the son of veteran broadcaster and one of Mashonaland Central’s iconic sons, Dr James Makamba, who is also a Senator, left an indelible mark in both his professional and personal life.

Reflecting on the loss, his father James Makamba shared, “There is no loss more painful and enduring than that of parents losing their child. Zororo’s immense talent as a communicator was widely recognised, and his loss is felt beyond our family.”

In honour of his legacy, St John’s College unveiled the Zororo Makamba Memorial Gate in 2022. The school praised Zororo as an all-rounder who excelled academically, represented the Rams in basketball, rugby, and athletics, and remained a vibrant presence wherever he went.

“Zororo’s achievements as a Prefect, athlete, and media talent leave a legacy of energy and vision. He was eloquent, optimistic, and ever-determined to give back to his Alma Mater,” said the school.

Zororo’s academic journey saw him graduate from Michigan State University in 2012 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, followed by a Master’s Degree in Film Production from the New York Film Academy in 2017. Through his productions like Point of View and State of The Nation, he became an icon of wit, insight, and positivity.

As Zimbabwe remembers Zororo, his legacy continues to inspire, showing how one life—though brief—can leave a lasting impact.
