Armed robbers struck an Ecobank branch in Bulawayo on Thursday afternoon, making off with a staggering US$4 million. The daring heist took place at the NRZ Building, where the robbers overpowered Safeguard security guards and seized the cash.
The robbers, armed with AK-47 assault rifles, loaded the cash into a white single-cab Ford Ranger before fleeing the scene. Eyewitnesses captured the incident on video, sharing the footage on social media. In the video, a bystander can be heard asking, “Where is the police?” as the robbers calmly loaded the cash into their getaway vehicle.
Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the robbery and suggested that it might have been an inside job. “We are investigating how this robbery took place. It appears there was inside involvement,” he said.
The robbery has sent shockwaves through the city, raising questions about the security measures in place at banks and armoured vehicles. Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information that could help in the investigation.
