Rwanda Severs Diplomatic Relations with Belgium Over “Neocolonial Actions”

The Government of Rwanda has formally severed diplomatic ties with Belgium, ordering all Belgian diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours. The decision, announced on Monday by Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, follows accusations that Belgium has “systematically mobilised against Rwanda using lies and manipulation” to destabilise the nation and the wider region.

In a strongly worded statement, Rwanda condemned Belgium’s historical role in fuelling ethnic extremism, which contributed to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The statement also accused Belgium of allowing its territory to host groups that propagate genocide denial and “sustain genocidal ideology.” The move underscores Kigali’s stance against what it termed Belgium’s “neocolonial delusions” and interference in regional conflicts, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Rwandan authorities emphasised that Belgium’s actions during the ongoing DRC crisis, including lobbying for sanctions against Rwanda, had crossed a “red line.” President Paul Kagame recently accused Belgium of “actively campaigning for hostile measures” against Rwanda, exacerbating tensions. The diplomatic rupture comes amid heightened regional instability, with Rwanda alleging Belgium’s historical and current policies perpetuate division.

Belgium has yet to issue a detailed response but confirmed it would take reciprocal measures. Under the Vienna Convention, Rwanda pledged to safeguard Belgian diplomatic property and archives in Kigali. Analysts suggest the split could strain EU-Rwanda relations, given Belgium’s influence within the bloc.
