Shop Owner Arrested for Assaulting and Detaining Workers

A Bindura shop owner, Allen Chinamano, was arrested yesterday and appeared in court today facing allegations of assault and wrongfully detaining his two employees. The incident, which unfolded at Chinamano’s shop, Taguchi Investments, a motor spares store next to Ponayi Mall, has sparked outrage in the community.

According to witnesses and anonymous sources, Chinamano called his employees, Isaac and Barbara, to work early on the morning of the incident. Upon arrival, Chinamano accused them of discrepancies between shop stock and his records. Despite a joint inventory check confirming all stock was present, Chinamano allegedly launched into a violent assault.

The sources claim Chinamano first punched Isaac in the face and chest. He then proceeded to assault Barbara with a folded car fan belt on her buttocks and back. The assault reportedly continued for several hours, with Chinamano using a wooden broomstick after exhausting other implements.

The ordeal didn’t end there. After locking Isaac inside the shop and confiscating his home keys, Chinamano allegedly forced Barbara to accompany him to his residence to search for the “missing items.” All the while, Isaac remained locked in the shop without access to food or water.

Upon returning to the shop, Chinamano is reported to have continued his accusations and assaults on both employees before locking them up again and leaving. Witnesses from nearby shops and a government complex intervened around 5pm, providing food and water to the distressed workers and contacting the police.

The police secured the release of Isaac and Barbara and arrested Chinamano. He appeared at Bindura Magistrate court today, denying all allegations. Despite his denial, Chinamano was remanded in police custody until May 24th, when he will face the court again.

The incident raises serious concerns about workplace violence and employee safety. Bindura Eye will continue to follow this story as it develops.
