Residents of Mazowe and Glendale in Mashonaland Central Province are celebrating the installation of solar-powered boreholes, a vital development under the Water, Sanitation, and Health programmes spearheaded by the government and development partners.

Community members gathered to witness the commissioning of the water points, which are expected to boost access to clean water and curb cholera outbreaks, a persistent challenge in recent years.

One resident expressed relief at the initiative, stating, “We are happy that this borehole has been commissioned. We have struggled with cholera before, but this brings hope that we can stay safe and maintain better hygiene.”

Traditional leader Chief Negomo also extended gratitude to the National Aids Council (NAC) for its role in facilitating the project, emphasising the need for communities to maintain high sanitation standards.

Highlighting the broader health benefits, NAC CEO Dr Bernard Madzima reiterated the importance of clean water in disease prevention. “Safe water is essential in health management. We cannot effectively combat HIV and AIDS while our clients are consuming unsafe water,” he said.

The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Christopher Magomo, urged communities to safeguard the infrastructure. “This investment will benefit us for years. Let’s ensure it is well maintained and protected from vandalism,” he stated.

Mazowe district has faced back-to-back cholera outbreaks in 2023 and 2024, with the latest wave extending into 2025, affecting 194 people. The borehole installations are expected to significantly reduce waterborne diseases and improve overall community health.
