Starlink Launched in Zimbabwe Friday Midnight

Starlink, the satellite internet constellation operated by SpaceX, officially launched its services in Zimbabwe just before midnight on Friday, 6 September 2024. Many Zimbabweans have eagerly awaited this development, as they have long sought faster and more affordable internet connectivity.

Users in Zimbabwe can now expect download speeds of up to 200Mbps, a significant improvement compared to what most local internet providers have been offering until recently.

Pricing

The Starlink website has been updated to reflect the exact prices for Zimbabwean users:

  • Hardware: Standard Kit – US$350
  • Service: Residential – US$50/month
  • Shipping and Handling: US$23
  • Deposit: US$50

The Standard Kit is designed for personal use at a fixed location. While Starlink has not specified whether they will be rolling out Generation 2 or Generation 3 kits, the pricing is competitive. The Residential package allows users to access the service at a fixed location within a 5km radius without needing to change their address or package. Shipping and handling fees cover delivery to your doorstep or collection points.

Starlink has not yet released the Starlink Mini kit in Zimbabwe, but it is expected to be available soon. This smaller, more affordable kit is priced at US$200 and could be a good option for small businesses and individuals.

Whilst this might be a positive development for rural communities, hardware pricing might still be astronomical. Locals who have been excited at the prospect of the new satellite service have always voiced that the much-needed service is beyond the reach of their meagre income.

We are yet to see if the future will offer relief to remote communities in Kanyemba, Dotito and Muzarabani where local networks such as Econet and NetOne barely exist.

For those who already have a Starlink device but are roaming from another country, there’s a way to switch to the cheaper Residential package now available in Zimbabwe. You can contact Starlink customer support to initiate the transfer process.

The launch of Starlink in Zimbabwe is a major milestone for internet connectivity in the country. The affordable pricing and high speeds offer a promising alternative to traditional internet providers. While there may be some initial challenges with capacity, the long-term benefits are likely to outweigh any short-term inconveniences.
