The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has announced plans for a nationwide strike on 28th March 2025, demanding a salary review to address the rising cost of living. The union warned that teachers will down tools if the government fails to meet their demands.
In a statement, ARTUZ highlighted the financial struggles faced by educators, with the lowest-paid teachers earning around US$300 monthly. The union insists that teachers should earn at least US$1,260 to cope with the escalating prices of basic necessities such as education, healthcare, and accommodation.
ARTUZ emphasised that the strike is solely about salaries and not linked to the war veterans’ protest scheduled for 31st March, which calls for President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s resignation. “Our fight is for fair wages—regardless of who is in power,” the union stated.
The planned strike comes amid growing unrest among civil servants. Nurses at Sally Mugabe Hospital recently protested over poor salaries and working conditions, further highlighting the widespread dissatisfaction.
The government has yet to respond to the teachers’ demands, but the looming strike underscores the urgent need for dialogue to avert disruptions in the education sector.
