Bonongwe and Partners legal firm’s senior partner, Advocate Elatone Bonongwe, was apprehended on Saturday for allegedly hiring hitmen who severely injured Pfura RDC Engineer Emson Chitsungo. He will remain in remand prison for two weeks.
On Monday, October 30, Bonongwe appeared at the Bindura magistrate court, facing robbery allegations. The State, represented by Garudzo Ziyadhuma, alleged that in October, the barrister planned to rob Chitsungo. He approached Musa Gandi of Budiriro and assigned him to assemble hitmen to attack the engineer at his residence in Mupfure Heights, Mt Darwin.
Gandi gathered a team of eight individuals and on October 25, they allegedly met Bonongwe at Redan Service Station in a Toyota Sienta. Bonongwe showed them the target’s residence, and they parted ways. Around 12:30 a.m., Gandi and his team arrived at Chitsungo’s place, scaled over the precast wall, and broke into his house using metal bars.
Once inside, they subjected Chitsungo and his family of six to physical abuse, including clenched fists, open hands, kicks, and even pressing a hot iron against Chitsungo’s buttocks, all while demanding money. The team ransacked the entire house, taking clothes, portable household items, and US$1600 in cash.
However, the hit squad was apprehended at a police roadblock on the Harare-Mukumbura road, near Mazowe Inn.
Upon stopping the car, four of the eight members fled and are still at large. During a search of the vehicle, the police discovered an AK47 bayonet knife and sharp metal rods and subsequently arrested the remaining four. These four individuals disclosed their involvement in the robbery in Mt Darwin and implicated Bonongwe, leading to his arrest.
During the advocate’s arrest, the police found mobile WhatsApp messages discussing the robbery. The engineer suffered a loss of property and money, estimated to have a total value of approximately US$30,000, with around US$21,000 worth of items recovered upon arresting the four individuals.
The police are currently appealing for information that may lead to the whereabouts of the remaining four who are still on the run.
