A troubling incident at Bindura Hospital has resulted in three security guards facing assault charges. The guards allegedly attacked a staff member, Takunda Tenisi (25), on suspicion of stealing medication.
According to court documents, Tenisi had received medical attention at the hospital and was prescribed medication he obtained from the pharmacy. A security guard there recorded the dispensed medication. Later, as Tenisi left the hospital, he was stopped at the gate by security guard Dennis Saurosi (47) who searched his bag. The search revealed prescribed medication – 42 ammoxyline and metronidazole pills.
Saurosi reportedly demanded Tenisi’s medical card, but Tenisi refused, concerned about his privacy. He suggested Saurosi verify the medication with his pharmacy colleague who had documented it earlier. However, Saurosi allegedly retrieved three batons from the guard room and, along with two other security guards, Michael Jackson (43) and Charles Maja (23), proceeded to assault Tenisi. The attack left Tenisi with a swollen left hand and injured ribs.
This incident sparked outrage among hospital staff, who reportedly staged a demonstration protesting the assault and raising other grievances, including alleged misuse of hospital vehicles and lack of running water. Hospital administration officials intervened, postponing the demonstration for a meeting with the medical superintendent.
This publication has in its possession videos of the demonstration whilst hospital authorities have denied any staff demonstration, claiming it’s simply a rumour.
