Trump Signs Order Prohibiting Transgender Women from Competing in Women’s Sports

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday banning transgender women from participating in female sports categories.

The order outlines guidelines and regulations and involves the Department of Education to ensure that high schools comply with the rules.

A transgender woman is defined as someone who was born male but identifies and lives as a woman.

Republicans argue that this order ensures fairness in sports, while LGBT and human rights organisations criticise it as discriminatory.

The order, which is effective immediately, primarily impacts high schools, universities, and local sports.

Several sports organisations, including swimming, athletics, and golf, have already banned transgender women from competing in female categories if they underwent male puberty.

Trump stated that this order would also apply to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, preventing transgender athletes from competing. He plans to deny visas to transgender athletes attempting to enter the US for the LA Games.

Trump claimed the order ends the “war on women’s sports” and that his administration would not allow “men” to compete against female athletes.

The National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), which governs college sports in the US, also banned transgender women from competing in women’s sports shortly after Trump signed the executive order. Previously, the NCAA permitted transgender women to compete if they met specific testosterone limits.
