Two young children tragically lost their lives in a fire that engulfed a bedroom hut in Esibomvu area, Esigodini, on Saturday afternoon, 12 April 2025. According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the victims—a four-year-old girl and her two-year-old brother—were locked inside the hut by their mother, who had gone to Esibomvu Business Centre, leaving them unattended.
The fire broke out at approximately 1630 hours, and by the time it was extinguished, the children had been burnt beyond recognition. A statement issued by the ZRP described the harrowing incident: “The ZRP reports a sad incident in which a girl (4 years) and a boy (2 years) were burnt beyond recognition after a bedroom hut they were sleeping in caught fire. The incident occurred after the victims’ mother had reportedly locked the bedroom door from the outside and went to Esibomvu Business Centre.”
This tragic event comes in the wake of another similar incident earlier this month in Village 3, Dromoland, Inyathi, Nkayi, where a one-year-five-month-old toddler died in a house fire while sleeping. The child’s mother had left her alone on the bed while escorting her four-year-old son to school.
Investigations into the cause of the Esigodini fire are ongoing, as the community grieves the heartbreaking loss of two young lives. The incidents highlight the need for increased awareness around child safety, especially during times when parents or guardians are away from home.
