Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga has emphasised the importance of unity and collective progress, urging Zimbabweans to honour the sacrifices made by freedom fighters during the liberation struggle. Speaking at Mtapa Hall in Gweru, where the independence torch was lit, Chiwenga reflected on the significance of the venue, which hosted the first Zanu Congress in 1964.

“The sacrifices made by those who gathered here were not to liberate one’s village or province, but the whole of Zimbabwe,” Chiwenga stated. He highlighted the contributions of various groups, including mothers, chimbwidos, and mujibhas, who supported fighters by cooking, delivering food, and relaying information. “We all fought for the liberation of the country, and that should forever be ingrained in our memories,” he added.

Chiwenga stressed the need to focus on future generations, urging leaders to safeguard the country’s independence and unity. “Let us strive to build a brighter future for the next generation. There are generations to come for which we should guard jealously,” he said.

The Vice-President also warned against attempts to distort the history of the liberation struggle, emphasising that unity among Zimbabweans is essential for achieving a just and prosperous nation. “It is only in unity that we hold true to the ideals of a unitary State which embraces all people from the north, south, west, and east in one,” he remarked.

The event was attended by several government officials, including Owen Ncube (Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution), July Moyo (Energy and Power Development), Kazembe Kazembe (Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage), Monica Mavhunga (Veterans of the Liberation Struggle), and Anselem Sanyatwe (Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture).

Zimbabwe’s national independence celebrations are scheduled for next Friday, with the main event to be held in Nembudziya, Gokwe North, in the Midlands province.
