The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have signed a Memorandum of Agreement aimed at enhancing their collaboration in tackling corruption and transnational organised crime. The agreement was formalised during a ceremony attended by ZACC Chairperson Michael Reza and ZRP Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Director, Commissioner Crispen Charumbira.

Speaking at the event, Commissioner Charumbira emphasised the critical role of public involvement in fighting corruption. “To end corruption, let it start with each one of us. We must develop a culture of exposing whoever is found engaging in corrupt activities,” he said. Charumbira urged the public to refrain from bribing intermediaries and instead report any incidents of corruption to the authorities.

Charumbira highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating, “This collaboration will enhance the sharing of intelligence and information on corruption cases, suspects, and their networks. Through access to INTERPOL databases, ZACC will be able to streamline investigations.” He detailed the key databases now accessible to ZACC, including records of stolen motor vehicles, wanted persons, stolen travel documents, and financial crimes analysis files.

The memorandum represents the first step in integrating ZACC into the INTERPOL system, a move expected to improve the commission’s ability to build robust cases against corrupt individuals and organisations. Charumbira described the agreement as a testament to the shared vision and mutual trust between the two institutions.

ZACC Chairperson Michael Reza also addressed the issue of fake anti-corruption officers exploiting the public. “Not all police officers or Anti-Corruption Commission members are corrupt. Some criminals are accessing police uniforms to masquerade as officials. We urge everyone to avoid engaging with such individuals and instead acquire proper documents from relevant offices,” Reza advised.

This partnership is seen as a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s efforts to combat corruption, enhance integrity, and foster accountability within communities.
