The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has recently made an announcement regarding the number of election agents allowed per political party in the upcoming December by-elections. According to a notice issued by ZEC Chairperson Justice Prisca Chigumba, each political party will be limited to having only three election agents present at polling stations during the by-elections.
Of the three agents, one will be stationed within the polling station, while the other two will be positioned in the vicinity of the polling station. This decision comes as the country prepares for the by-elections following recalls made by Sengezo Tshabangu, who claims to be the secretary general for the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), as well as the unfortunate passing of certain representatives.
In her statement, Justice Chigumba clarified that this restriction is in accordance with section 95(5) of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13]. She specified that for the by-elections scheduled for December 9, 2023, each political party can only have three election agents at or near each polling station. Additionally, any mention of the chief election agent from a candidate’s side will now be replaced with references to the political party of the candidates participating in the specific election.
As the by-elections approach, it remains to be seen how this limitation on election agents will impact the overall electoral process. Further updates and developments will be provided as they become available.
