A Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University (ZEGU) final-year Law student was hospitalised after consuming an unknown substance. The incident occurred after the university authorities barred the student from sitting for their final examination due to outstanding fees.
We are yet to establish the student’s full name but, according to our reliable source, the male student was on a scholarship.
“This student was on a scholarship, however, his sponsor delayed registering him and tabled his issue to the university authorities so that he could sit for his examination and they agreed, only to stop him before an hour to start his final exam on Tuesday,” a friend to the bedridden student told this publication on condition of anonymity.
Contacted for his comment, the university’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Innocent Chirisa showed no remorse over the sad incident.
He said, “Yes we have heard there is a student who drank some poison. Every institution has its rules and regulations which govern it and must be followed.”
“In universities, no one can sit for an examination before registering. It’s like getting into an aeroplane without booking and a ticket, you will not go anywhere.”
“Now l feel like l am being pressured for nothing as if l am the one to blame. The college has its rules, and rules and laws are stubborn if not rightfully followed,” he added.
“That student had not registered and we could not allow him to sit for that examination. If we allowed him, to think of what was going to happen next, more students were to come with their different excuses and we couldn’t accept that,” he continued.
Students who spoke to this publication blasted Professor Chirisa and his administration for their ruthless behaviours. They said Chirisa was slowly turning the university into hell on earth with his leadership style.
Others thought that the university should have allowed him to sit for the examination and then withhold his results.
“Considering that this guy is an orphan whom they knew all along he enrolled under some scholarship, they should have allowed him to sit for his final examination,'” said one student.
“He presented his case to them and they allowed him to sit for some examinations before, only to stop him on Tuesday when he was supposed to write his final paper,” said another.
The Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University is a university founded under Christian tenets, based in Mashonaland Central, founded by the late Dr Ezekiel Guti the brains behind the ZAOGA church.
