Zimbabwean businesses are gearing up for a surge in demand as China’s appetite for their products skyrockets. Trade between the two countries soared by 39.4% in the first nine months of 2023, exceeding the entire volume of 2022, according to data from the Chinese embassy.
This meteoric rise translates to Zimbabwe exporting $1.36 billion worth of goods to China, with major contributions coming from mining and agriculture. Notably, citrus fruits are set for a significant boost thanks to the vast Chinese market.
China’s growing interest was further fueled by Zimbabwe’s participation in the 6th China International Import Expo (CIIE) in November 2023. Local companies exhibited under the banner “New Era, Shared Future,” showcasing processed foods, leather goods, and handicrafts, all of which received promising buyer interest.
“The participation at CIIE exposed the immense demand for Zimbabwean products in China,” says ZimTrade CEO Allan Majuru. “We have been actively facilitating business connections between Chinese buyers and local producers, and this surge in trade is a testament to our efforts.”
The Chamber of Chinese Enterprises in Zimbabwe echoes this sentiment, highlighting the “positive trajectory” of bilateral trade. Liu Baixue, the vice chairperson, anticipates a greater variety and volume of Zimbabwean exports in the future, particularly in agriculture.
With strong partnerships and a strategic focus on key sectors like citrus fruits, Zimbabwean businesses are poised to tap into the vast potential of the Chinese market, propelling economic growth and creating exciting opportunities for the nation.
