Zimbabwe has emerged victorious in the first-ever Online Continental Chess Championships for Prisoners, securing gold medals in both the male and female categories in a landmark achievement for the country’s prison chess programme.
The tournament, played virtually, featured inmates from various African nations competing in a structured format that tested strategic thinking and mental endurance. Zimbabwe’s strong performance has positioned it as a dominant force in chess at the continental level.

Among Zimbabwe’s standout competitors were Leo Matibe and Nicholas Damota, both of whom played a pivotal role in leading their side to victory. The two players previously finished second in the 2021 Intercontinental Chess Online Competition for Prisoners, demonstrating consistency and growth in the sport.
The Zimbabwean men’s team remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, finishing with six victories and one draw, amassing 13 match points and 24.5 board points. Their dominance underscores the depth of talent within Zimbabwe’s prison chess initiative, which continues to provide inmates with an opportunity to develop critical thinking and competitive skills.
Following this triumph, Zimbabwe’s chess players in prison will now shift their focus to the Behind The Wall Chess Tournament, scheduled to take place in June, where they will seek to further their success.
