Zimbabwean rugby referee Precious Pazani has made history by becoming the first match official from Zimbabwe to officiate at the prestigious Six Nations Rugby League. On 23rd March 2025, Pazani took centre stage as the referee for the match between England and Italy in York, marking a significant milestone in her career and for Zimbabwean sports.
At 34, Pazani is now one of only two African referees to officiate at the Six Nations tournament, alongside South Africa’s Aimee Barret-Theron. The Six Nations, featuring teams from Scotland, Wales, Italy, France, Ireland, and England, is one of the most renowned rugby competitions in the world.
Pazani’s achievement adds to her growing list of accolades. She was previously the first Zimbabwean referee to officiate at both the Rugby World Cup and the World Challenger Series, solidifying her reputation as a trailblazer in the sport.
Speaking after the match, Pazani expressed her pride in representing Zimbabwe on such a global stage. “This is not just a personal achievement but a victory for Zimbabwe and African rugby. I hope my journey inspires more young women to pursue their dreams in sports, regardless of the challenges,” she said.
Pazani’s rise to prominence has been marked by dedication and resilience. Her journey from local rugby fields in Zimbabwe to international arenas is a testament to her skill and determination. Rugby enthusiasts and officials have praised her for breaking barriers and paving the way for greater diversity in rugby officiating.
The Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) celebrated Pazani’s milestone, describing it as a “proud moment for the nation.” ZRU President Aaron Jani said, “Precious has shown that with hard work and passion, anything is possible. She is a role model for aspiring referees and athletes across the continent.”
Pazani’s success also highlights the growing recognition of women in rugby, a sport traditionally dominated by men. Her achievements are expected to encourage more female participation in rugby, both on and off the field.
