Zimborders Employee Convicted of Smuggling 96 Tonnes of Chrome

A Customer Services Agent at Zimborders, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for smuggling chrome concentrate at the Beitbridge Border Post.

Brian Zimbume was found guilty of fraud after tricking officials from the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) into giving him access to their scanning tablets back in September 2024.

Zimbume claimed he needed to fix issues with the system, but instead, he used the tablets to approve the illegal release of three Scania trucks carrying 96 tonnes of chrome concentrate into South Africa without proper clearance.

His actions were against the law and hurt the revenue that the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority collects. The court described Zimbume’s actions as deliberate and unlawful, leading to his conviction.

Zimbune was charged under the Customs and Excise Act for smuggling chrome shipments. This illegal activity could have cost the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) important money needed for the country.
