Zinara to Crush Unlicensed Vehicles at Toll Gates
The Zimbabwe National Roads Authority (Zinara) has announced an initiative to enforce traffic law compliance: crushing vehicles with incorrect registrations or outstanding license fees dating back to 2018. This unprecedented program aims to improve road safety and deter non-compliance.
Zinara plans to deploy mobile vehicle crushing units at toll gates across the country starting in April 2024. These units will swiftly verify vehicle registrations and license statuses. Any car found to be unlicensed incorrectly registered, or with outstanding fees exceeding four years will be immediately crushed.
Zinara asserts that this drastic measure is necessary to address the pervasive issue of non-compliance. “Our roads are not a haven for those who choose to flout regulations,” the agency stated. “This initiative is both a deterrent and a direct action towards rectifying pervasive non-compliance.”
The announcement has sparked debate. Critics argue that crushing vehicles is an extreme response to minor administrative issues and could result in the destruction of valuable assets. Proponents, however, see it as a necessary shock tactic to significantly reduce the number of unlicensed and improperly registered vehicles, thereby enhancing road safety.
To ease the transition, Zinara has announced a grace period before implementing the program. Vehicle owners are urged to rectify any registration discrepancies or settle outstanding license fees to avoid having their cars crushed.
Zinara emphasizes that the mobile crushing units are not solely about punishment. They are part of a broader strategy to modernize road safety measures and instil a culture of responsibility among vehicle owners. “This is about safeguarding our roads and ensuring that every vehicle on them is there by right, contributing to a safer and more regulated road traffic environment,” the agency stated.
With this initiative, Zinara delivers a clear message: “Compliance is not optional.” The program underscores their commitment to enforcing traffic laws and ensuring the safety of Zimbabwe’s citizens.
