President Mnangagwa Commissions New Fleet to Revolutionise Harare’s Waste Management

President Emmerson Mnangagwa commissioned a newly acquired fleet of refuse collection vehicles from Geo Pomona Waste Management, marking a significant advance in Harare’s efforts to improve environmental health and urban cleanliness.
The expanded fleet comprises 25 compactor trucks, 16 tipper trucks, 10 skip trucks, five street sweepers, two excavators, and two spinner trucks. This investment is designed to enhance the efficiency and reach of refuse collection services citywide, facilitating faster operations and more consistent waste management for residents and businesses.
Geo Pomona’s Chief Executive Officer and Executive Chairman, Dr Dilesh Nguwaya, highlighted the transformative impact of their waste collection contract with the City of Harare. He emphasised the role of technology in modernising operations and noted the employment of City of Harare workers on a secondment basis to support service delivery.
Harare Province Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Charles Tavengwa, praised the government’s developmental initiatives, commending Geo Pomona’s visible contributions to the city’s ecological health and thanking President Mnangagwa for enabling the project.
Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume expressed appreciation for government efforts, describing waste management as a pressing issue that transcends political divisions. He stressed collaborative work between government and the private sector as essential to achieving progress.
Acting Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Zhemu Soda, recognised the commissioning event as a significant milestone aligned with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030. He praised the partnership between the City of Harare and Geo Pomona in transforming waste management and restoring civic dignity by addressing long-standing waste challenges.
In his keynote address, President Mnangagwa reiterated the government’s commitment to uniform service delivery across Zimbabwe. He underscored the need for modernised, technologically enabled local authorities and advocated for advanced waste sorting and recycling methods. “We are not merely unveiling new refuse collection equipment; we are witnessing the continued growth of a project that is of strategic significance,” the President said.
The commissioning event was attended by government officials including Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, Cabinet Ministers, deputies, diplomatic representatives, and private sector stakeholders.
