Space Agencies Team Up for Sustainable Lunar Energy Solution
In a move that could significantly advance lunar exploration, Russia and China are seriously considering building a nuclear power plant on the moon’s surface by 2035. This ambitious joint project would leverage Russia’s expertise in “nuclear space energy” to provide a reliable and sustainable energy source for future lunar settlements.
The head of Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, Yuri Borisov, announced the project during a recent youth event. He explained that solar panels, while useful, wouldn’t be sufficient to meet the energy demands of a permanent lunar base. Nuclear power, on the other hand, could ensure a constant flow of electricity, enabling long-term scientific research and habitation on the moon.
While some have expressed concerns about the potential militarization of space, Borisov emphasized that the project is purely for peaceful purposes. He assured that there are no plans to weaponize the lunar power plant and that the technical solutions for its construction are already available.
This collaboration between Russia and China marks a significant step forward in establishing a sustainable human presence on the moon.
