BULAWAYO – Zimbabwe Republic Police say armed robbers targeted a Mukuru outlet worker in Bulawayo after tracking her to work and confronting her in a car park along Jason Moyo Street on Wednesday morning, before forcing her to unlock a safe and making off with cash in both US dollars and South African rand.

Police said the incident happened at around 7am on Jason Moyo Street between 8th and 9th Avenue as the female employee arrived for duty and was parking her vehicle. No arrests had been made at the time of the police update.

Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said preliminary investigations indicate the suspects, whose number is not yet known, “forcibly escorted her into the offices and ordered her to open the strong room and a Chubb safe.”

Police said the employee complied, after which the suspects took US$78,141 and R501,820 from the safe.

Commissioner Nyathi said the robbers also removed a Digital Video Recorder (DVR), which stores surveillance footage, along with a panic button, before escaping through a back door.

The case adds to continued public concern around armed robberies targeting businesses and cash-handling services. Police have not released further details on whether the suspects used a getaway vehicle or how long the robbery took, saying investigations are ongoing.

Members of the public with information that may assist investigations are generally encouraged to report to the nearest police station.
