Eight people were killed and 11 others seriously injured in two separate road traffic accidents recorded over the weekend, according to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
The first crash happened on Saturday at around 6.30pm along the Roy–Buffalo Range Road in Chiredzi. Police said a Nissan NV200 carrying 11 passengers overturned at the 112km peg after the driver attempted to overtake a truck while an oncoming vehicle was approaching.
After noticing the oncoming vehicle, the driver reportedly accelerated to complete the overtaking manoeuvre but lost control. The vehicle then veered off the road to the left, overturned several times and eventually landed on its wheels, police said.
Three passengers died in the crash, while eight others, including the driver, sustained serious injuries. The bodies were taken to Chiredzi General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

In the second incident, five people died on the spot just after midnight on Sunday following a head-on collision at the 54km peg along the Harare–Chirundu Road.
Police said a Nissan AD Van with eight passengers travelling towards Chinhoyi collided head-on with a Hino truck travelling towards Harare, which had six passengers on board at the time.
Five occupants of the AD Van, including the driver, died at the scene, while three others were seriously injured. The bodies of the deceased were taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital mortuary for post-mortems, and the injured were referred to Parirenyatwa Hospital for treatment.
Although the accidents occurred outside Mashonaland Central, the Harare–Chirundu highway is a key route used daily by travellers and transporters passing through or connecting to parts of Mashonaland Central, including Mazowe and Bindura. Police continue to urge motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking and to drive with caution, particularly at night and on busy highways.
