Nine people were killed and 25 others injured on Monday morning after a National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) train collided with a bus at a level crossing in Chiredzi, according to an NRZ press release issued on 16 June 2026.
NRZ said the crash happened at around 0700hrs as the train was travelling from Triangle to the NRZ Lundi siding. The bus was struck at the level crossing, resulting in nine passengers dying at the scene.
The victims include seven adults and two minors, the statement said. Those injured were taken to hospital for treatment.
NRZ said emergency services, including the police, ambulances and the fire brigade, attended the scene and were conducting what it described as an active rescue operation.
In its account of the incident, NRZ attributed the collision to the bus driver allegedly failing to observe level crossing rules, which require motorists to stop and check for oncoming trains before proceeding.
In the statement, NRZ Public Affairs and Stakeholder Relations Manager A. Kunambura conveyed condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died, and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
NRZ urged motorists to strictly follow level crossing regulations to prevent further loss of life and injuries, adding that additional information would be shared through its official channels as verified details become available.
