Old Mutual manager jailed 15 years for raping intern, court hears

A senior manager at Old Mutual, Musa Nyasha Dube Manyika (41), has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after he was convicted of two counts of raping a female university student who was on attachment at the company.
Manyika, who was employed as a business development manager, was represented in court by his lawyer Mr Takudzwa Nyambira. He was convicted after a full trial before regional magistrate Mrs Fadzai Matumbu-Mtombeni.
According to evidence presented in court, the first incident happened in November 2022. The complainant, who was aged 24, received a WhatsApp message from Manyika asking her to come to Old Mutual Gardens to help pack banners.
The court heard that when she arrived, she went to the basement where the banners were kept and completed the task. Prosecutors said Manyika then lured the student to his office, locked the door and raped her, pushing her onto a table.

The second rape occurred on 19 June 2024, the court heard. Manyika contacted the complainant again and they met at Ashbrittle Shops.
During that meeting, the court heard, Manyika invited her into his vehicle. He was said to have had sexual intercourse with her against her will.
The court also heard that Manyika oversaw the Old Mutual Scholarship programme. He was ultimately convicted on two counts of rape and sentenced to an effective 15 years’ imprisonment.
Cases involving abuse of authority and sexual violence in the workplace remain a concern in Zimbabwe, with courts urging victims and witnesses to report such crimes and support due process.
