Four people were killed and one passenger was left in intensive care after a head-on collision between a Honda Fit and a heavy-duty lorry near Chinhoyi Provincial Heroes Acre on Saturday night.

Inspector Effort Chapoto, the officer in charge of traffic in Chinhoyi, confirmed the crash happened at about 9pm on the Harare-Chirundu road, involving a lorry travelling from Harare towards Chinhoyi and a Honda Fit travelling towards Harare.

Chapoto said the Honda Fit driver and two passengers, a couple reportedly travelling from Zambia, died at the scene. “The driver and a couple who were on their way to a funeral in Harare,” he said.

He added that a pedestrian was also killed after being struck during the collision. “A pedestrian also died in the accident,” Chapoto said. Circumstances surrounding the pedestrian’s presence on the road at that time were still being investigated.

The lorry driver survived and was reported to be in a stable condition. Chapoto said one other person in the Honda Fit sustained severe injuries and was taken to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital. “The other passenger, in the Honda Fit, sustained serious injuries and was admitted in the intensive care unit at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital,” he said.

Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Marian Chombo, visited the scene and expressed concern about repeated crashes near the shrine, which motorists often describe as a black spot.

“There have been a lot of accidents that have happened near this shrine, maiming a lot of people,” Chombo said. She highlighted that the deceased couple were reportedly escorting the body of a relative to Harare for a funeral. “It’s sad because these people were coming from Zambia, with a body, going to Harare for a funeral and, unfortunately, met this tragedy.”

Chombo urged motorists to avoid night travel where possible and to drive cautiously. “I want to urge people not to travel at night and, if travelling, motorists must exercise caution,” she said. “I want to urge the people of Zimbabwe, especially those from this province, to travel during the day. We must not drive while under the influence of alcohol and we should not over speed as we are losing a lot of lives.”

Police had not released further details on the cause of the crash at the time of publication. The Harare-Chirundu highway is a major route used by local and cross-border traffic, including heavy trucks, and has recorded a number of serious accidents in recent weeks.

The latest fatalities add to growing public concern over road safety in Zimbabwe, particularly along busy highways that connect provinces and neighbouring countries. Authorities continue to appeal for responsible driving, adherence to speed limits and greater caution, especially after dark.
