The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says it has launched a countrywide operation targeting vehicles travelling without registration number plates and those fitted with illegal sirens, blue lights, bar lights, beacons and other unauthorised gadgets.
In a press statement dated 10 March 2026, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the operation covers all categories of vehicles, including private family cars, company fleets, Government vehicles and public service vehicles.
Police said they are concerned that some motorists are allegedly removing registration plates deliberately to evade identification after committing offences such as armed robberies, kidnapping and hit-and-run road traffic accidents. The ZRP also cited traffic violations including driving against the flow of traffic, going through red traffic lights and lane violations.

The statement adds that police have also noted instances where some public service vehicles remove registration plates to avoid follow-ups on traffic offences, with police warning that this can contribute to road accidents.
On illegal warning equipment, the ZRP said sirens and blue lights are reserved for authorised emergency vehicles and that misuse causes chaos on the roads. Police further warned that bar lights can disturb other motorists’ vision at night, increasing danger for road users.
According to the ZRP, all plateless vehicles will be impounded immediately and will only be released once the proper registration process has been completed and plates have been affixed. Police also said illegal sirens, blue lights, bar lights, beacons and related gadgets will be removed on the spot.
Meanwhile, the ZRP urged the public to disregard a document circulating on social media about the operation, saying it was leaked by someone who attended a commanders’ meeting. Police said updates will be provided through official ZRP channels and called on motorists across Mashonaland Central and the rest of Zimbabwe to cooperate to maintain law and order.
