The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has completed an assessment tour of the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road Rehabilitation and Widening Project, with officials saying 47.5 kilometres have now been completed and opened to traffic.

The project, which targets the upgrading and widening of the 440-kilometre highway linking Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, is part of the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP) Phase 2, a government initiative aimed at modernising key road infrastructure.

According to the report from the tour, the delegation was led by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Felix Mhona, and included the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Matabeleland North Province, Richard Moyo, as well as the provincial roads engineer for Matabeleland North, Xolani Ncube, among other senior officials.

Mhona said the purpose of the visit was to confirm contractor presence on site and to check progress against agreed timelines, adding that President Emmerson Mnangagwa has directed that the rehabilitation works be expedited to improve transport efficiency for motorists and tourists.

“I am happy with the works that I have witnessed,” Mhona said. “Works are progressing well and by the end of this year, the road will be completed up to Victoria Falls.”

Moyo also welcomed the progress and said the completed road sections would bring significant benefits to Matabeleland North. “We are happy as a province, and we want to thank His Excellency President Mnangagwa,” he said.

Officials stated that the road has been divided into eight lots, with eight contractors responsible for specific sections. Moyo said the contractors have pledged to complete about 10 kilometres per month each, which could potentially translate into around 80 kilometres in a month if targets are met.

The Ministry’s Director of Roads, Engineer Jaravani Kangara, also confirmed that on March 13, 2026, an additional five kilometres in the Insiza area was opened to traffic.

As at the time of the assessment, the progress shared by officials showed the following completed sections: Fossil Contracting (Lot 1) 6.2km; Masimba Construction (Lot 2) 5.0km; Syvern Investment (Lot 3) 5.0km; Bitumen Resources (Lot 4) 5.4km; Tensor Systems (Lot 5) 5.0km; Asphalt Products (Lot 6) 0km; Bitumen World (Lot 7) 0km; and Linash Construction (Lot 8) 0km.

The update also noted that Bitumen World has completed 20.9 kilometres on the Hwange section under ERRP Phase 2 legacy projects. In total, 47.5 kilometres have been opened to traffic, leaving an estimated 392.9 kilometres remaining.

Government says the upgraded Bulawayo–Victoria Falls highway is expected to improve road safety, reduce travel time, facilitate trade and transport, and strengthen Zimbabwe’s role as a regional logistics and tourism hub, with Victoria Falls remaining a key domestic and international tourism destination.
