Zimbabwean UFC welterweight Themba Gorimbo has announced his retirement from mixed martial arts, saying he is walking away after failing to achieve his ambition of becoming a UFC champion.

Gorimbo, 35, made the announcement on social media, where he thanked the UFC and supporters while explaining that his decision is rooted in falling short of his ultimate goal. In his post, he wrote: “Thank you to UFC and everyone. I dared to be someone and something and failed. Gave all I can in the sport and I am walking away. My dream was to be a UFC champion and if I cannot be that, I am going to walk away.”

His announcement comes after a run of difficult results, including a split-decision loss to Jonathan Micallef at UFC Perth, which was reported as his third successive defeat.

Gorimbo has been widely followed in Zimbabwe and across Africa for his story of rising from hardship to competing in the UFC. He has been described as the “Cinderella Man” and is credited as the first Zimbabwean to win a fight in the UFC.
