Mnangagwa urges private sector to invest in Zimbabwe’s cultural and creative economy

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has urged the private sector to channel more capital into Zimbabwe’s cultural and creative economy, saying cultural tourism, creative industries, events and cultural exports should be treated as priority areas for growth.

Speaking in Harare, Mnangagwa said a number of Zimbabweans, both locally and in the diaspora, are already building community-based tourism products focused on heritage and cuisine, which he described as a practical way to turn culture into business.

“I applaud Zimbabweans including those in the diaspora who are establishing community based tourism products that advance our heritage and cuisines. Culture is good for business,” he said.

He said the sectors highlighted “remain priority cost areas that are pertinent for investment”, and called on the corporate world to work with customers and other partners to expand investment into the cultural and creative economy.

Mnangagwa said improved collaboration should result in stronger support systems for artists, cultural practitioners and entrepreneurs, including infrastructure that promotes professionalisation and skills development.

“Synergies in this regard must see us create a new infrastructure for increased professionalization, skills training and creation of economic opportunities for our talent,” he said.

The President’s remarks place renewed focus on the role of heritage, cuisine and creative output in economic development, at a time when cultural tourism and locally-driven events are increasingly being promoted as avenues for jobs and community income across Zimbabwe, including in Mashonaland Central.
