Africa Day celebrations held at Heritage Village, which also houses the African Museum, brought together diplomats and government officials for an event centred on unity, culture and sustainable development.
The commemorations were held under the African Union’s 2026 theme, “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” placing water security and sanitation at the centre of discussions on Africa’s socio-economic transformation.
Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri attended as guest of honour, representing the First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa. Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Amon Murwira was also present, alongside ambassadors and other invited guests.
In her keynote remarks, Muchinguri-Kashiri congratulated Zimbabwe and President Emmerson Dambudzi Mnangagwa on the country’s election to a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027 to 2028 term. She also commended the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade for efforts to advance Zimbabwe’s diplomatic profile.
Muchinguri-Kashiri highlighted government programmes aimed at improving access to water, including irrigation development and rural water projects, saying such initiatives support food security and sustainable livelihoods.
She also welcomed what she described as prevailing peace and stability across much of the continent, urging African nations to continue working together to safeguard unity, development and prosperity.
The event featured traditional foods and beverages from different countries and performances by cultural groups, reflecting Africa’s diversity and shared heritage. Among those in attendance was Honourable Betty Kaseke, along with senior government officials and members of the diplomatic community.
Organisers said the gathering was intended to reinforce Africa’s collective aspirations and the importance of cooperation in addressing challenges such as water sustainability, sanitation and economic development in line with Agenda 2063.
