Chinese-owned cement producer Shuntai Investments says it plans to build a 50-megawatt thermal power station to support its US$100 million cement manufacturing project in Chegutu, in a move aimed at securing stable electricity for operations.
Shuntai Investments administrator Jack Zhang said the company wants to reduce the risk of production stoppages linked to power cuts by becoming self-sufficient, while also feeding any surplus electricity into Zimbabwe’s national grid.
“We want to be self-sufficient in our operations. We are also setting up a 50-megawatt thermal power plant with the view to feed excess power into the national grid,” Zhang said.
Zhang said construction of the Chegutu cement plant is now more than 90% complete, with the project expected to be commissioned in September.
“We are coming to the final stages. We are expecting to complete all construction works and start operating by September this year,” he said.
“At the moment, all civil works are at around 90 per cent, and we are now moving to the installation stage.”
The project had initially been scheduled for completion in May, but Zhang said delays were caused by disruptions to global supply chains following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which affected the delivery of key materials.
The development comes as Zimbabwe continues to seek new industrial investment while grappling with persistent power supply challenges that have affected manufacturing and mining output in recent years.
