Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) officers and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) detectives from Bindura have carried out a joint proactive enforcement operation in Glendale targeting unlicensed premises.
During the operation, the team visited Cleonik Pharmacy and found it operating without licences, according to MCAZ.
MCAZ reported that an inspection at the premises uncovered a large stockpile of expired and unregistered medicines that were allegedly being sold to unsuspecting members of the public. The products included injectable medicines such as insulin pens and ampoules that were stored at room temperature, in what the authority said was disregard of cold chain requirements.
MCAZ warned that such handling conditions can render medicines ineffective and may be potentially life-threatening.
Officers also described the premises as filthy and disorganised, and said it was unfit for handling pharmaceutical products.
The responsible individuals were apprehended at the scene and have since been referred for prosecution.
In its public warning, MCAZ urged residents in Mashonaland Central and across Zimbabwe to avoid buying medicines from unlicensed premises, saying the practice is extremely dangerous. The authority cautioned that expired medicines can degrade into toxic substances, while unregistered products may contain harmful adulterants or incorrect doses. It added that buyers often have no recourse when things go wrong.
MCAZ encouraged the public to buy medicines only from licensed pharmacies and registered health facilities. Anyone who suspects illegal medicine trading can report to MCAZ via email at mcaz@mcaz.co.zw or to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) by dialling 995.
MCAZ said the Glendale enforcement action forms part of its ongoing efforts to rid Zimbabwe of illegal medicine trading and safeguard public health.
