The National Assembly has passed the Constitution Amendment (No. 3) Bill after it secured the two-thirds majority required for constitutional amendments in a vote held on Thursday afternoon.
In the division, 216 Members of Parliament voted in favour of the Bill while 42 voted against it.
The Bill was approved following debate in the National Assembly and will now proceed to the Senate, where it is expected to be tabled and debated.
Section 328 of the Constitution sets the threshold for constitutional changes at a two-thirds majority in both the National Assembly and the Senate before a Bill can be presented for Presidential assent.
The Constitution Amendment (No. 3) Bill includes proposals aimed at clarifying institutional mandates and adjusting the structure and composition of certain public institutions. Provisions referenced in the Bill touch on areas including elections, the judiciary and executive appointments.
The next stage will be the Senate’s consideration, which will determine whether the Bill achieves the second two-thirds vote required by the Constitution.
