The National Gallery of Zimbabwe has appointed Zimpapers as its official media partner ahead of the 58th International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art (CIMAM) conference, scheduled to be held in Harare in November.
More than 300 museum directors and art professionals from around the world are expected at the event, which organisers say will provide a major platform for Zimbabwe’s visual arts sector at a time when international demand for the country’s artworks and cultural artefacts is growing.
National Gallery of Zimbabwe Executive Director Raphael Chikukwa said the partnership with Zimpapers was driven by the media group’s reach and its record of covering arts and culture.
“We have decided to engage Zimpapers as our media partner because of its reach and influence,” Chikukwa told Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub.
“In terms of preparations, we have done our best and intend to reach out to as many people as possible ahead of the conference.
“We are looking forward to welcoming more than 300 guests who will grace the event.
“This is the first time Zimbabwe will host such a conference, bringing together museum directors from different parts of the world for such a momentous occasion.”
Chikukwa said the three-day conference would include workshops, networking and exhibition opportunities for local artists. He added that the Gallery plans to open new studios in Harare’s central business district and Mbare to broaden access for artists who want to showcase their work, including creatives from areas such as Tengenenge.
He said renovations at the National Gallery were progressing ahead of the event, under a refurbishment project co-sponsored by the Higherlife Foundation and the Mellon Foundation.
“In terms of renovations, I can safely say we have covered a lot of ground,” he said. “It is my hope that we will be finished very soon and be fully ready for the conference.”
Chikukwa said the Gallery would remain open to the public during renovations, allowing art collectors and visitors to continue viewing collections while work proceeds.
Zimbabwe secured the right to host the CIMAM conference during the organisation’s meeting in Barcelona, Spain. Chikukwa attended that meeting, alongside CIMAM president Suhanya Raffel, who is also director of Museum M+ in Hong Kong. Other delegates cited in the update included Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo and Elvira Dyangani Ose.
Chikukwa said the conference would also include a cultural tour for delegates to Masvingo to visit the Great Zimbabwe Monument, which he said would help promote Zimbabwe as a heritage and cultural tourism destination.
For communities in Mashonaland Central, organisers say international arts gatherings in Zimbabwe can have wider benefits through increased visibility for local talent, stronger cultural partnerships, and tourism spill-overs, as the country positions itself as a destination for contemporary art in Africa.
