UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced he will step down as leader of the Labour party and resign as prime minister, less than two years after Labour’s historic general election victory.

According to a report by The Guardian, Starmer’s decision follows days of rising pressure from Labour MPs, including cabinet ministers, after Andy Burnham returned to Westminster and won the Makerfield byelection against a challenge from Reform UK.

The Guardian reported that Starmer had said on Friday he would fight any leadership contest, but discussions with ministers and time spent with his wife, Victoria, at Chequers over the weekend appeared to have changed his position. It said drafts of a resignation speech began circulating on Saturday, with more than half a dozen cabinet ministers understood to have privately told him to go.

Starmer is expected to remain in Downing Street until a Labour leadership contest is completed or a handover is finalised, leaving the next leader to confront economic pressures and an uncertain international environment.

The Guardian said Starmer’s decision could trigger a contest among Labour MPs to choose the UK’s seventh prime minister in 10 years, with Burnham described as the leading contender. It added that there could also be a swift handover if potential rivals fail to secure the 81 nominations required, or if deals are struck behind the scenes. Health secretary Wes Streeting was mentioned as one possible contender.

The report noted that some Labour MPs want Burnham to face a full leadership contest to test his readiness for the role, while others fear a protracted race could further damage Labour’s public standing.

The Guardian traced pressure on Starmer back months, saying it intensified after election setbacks in May and a series of internal disputes and resignations. It reported that Starmer’s leadership had been shaken earlier in the year when Anas Sarwar, Labour’s leader in Scotland, called for him to quit, although the cabinet supported him at that time.

The report added that Starmer’s position was further weakened by controversy around the appointment of Peter Mandelson as UK ambassador to Washington, alongside domestic policy rows including winter fuel payment restrictions and welfare cuts, which The Guardian said contributed to Labour’s slide in the polls.

For Zimbabweans following UK politics, the development will be watched closely for its potential impact on British foreign policy and decisions affecting migration, international development, and relations with African countries, including Zimbabwe.
